Katie awarded with EMBA Scholarship!

Congratulations to our General Manager, Katie Hewison, who has been awarded with a Community Scholarship Award to study an Executive MBA at Lancaster University!

The award has been given to just three students who were able to demonstrate how the EMBA will help enhance their not-for-profit organisations serving the Lancaster area, all of who were granted with a 75% reduction of programme fees.

The Barrie Wells Trust is based in the heart of Lancaster and Katie was awarded the Scholarship as the EMBA will add great value to her role at the Trust and delivering their current Box4Kids initiative.

Box4Kids provides seriously ill and disabled children to be treated as a VIP by watching sport and entertainment from the comfort of an executive box.  Although Box4Kids operates nationally, the initiative has helped many children from the local community.

Katie said, “I am incredibly grateful for the support from Barrie Wells in helping me to pursue the EMBA and also for the support from Lancaster University.  I think it is fantastic that they are helping local not-for-profit organisations.”

“It has been 12 years since I graduated from University so I am really looking forward to the challenge of returning to study to help enhance my business and leadership skills and how I can implement that at the Barrie Wells Trust.”

Katie has been involved with the charity since it was launched, starting out as an Athlete Ambassador.  She was personally funded by Barrie Wells from 2009-2014 as a professional triathlete for Great Britain, with her sporting career highlights including World Duathlon Champion, World Cup Triathlon winner and was ranked top 20 in the ITU World Triathlon rankings.

In return for her sponsorship, Katie helped to give back to the charity by delivering workshops in schools and clubs.  After retiring from full-time professional sport she took on a role as Development Manager at the Trust which involved developing the charity’s Box4Kids initiative.  She has contributed to the project now spanning across 85 different venues in the UK which has helped over 6,500 deserving guests to date.
